let the altitude of the triangle be h , the altitude of the smaller triangle be x , area of the bigger triangle be Aand the area of the smaller triangle be a

then A=2a

  a/2a = (x/h)2

  x/h = 1/√2

 h= √2x

 remaining height = √2x - x

                         =x(√2-1)

therefore       ratio = 1:(√2-1)
